Never Mind The Sex Pistols, Here Are The Dead Kennedys!’

John Lydon photographed by Michael Jang with a copy of The Dead Kennedys’ 1979 debut single “California Über Alles” and a Heineken on his way to a press conference in San Francisco, 1980,, during his post-Sex Pistols days.

According to the June 1980 issue of Trouser Press magazine, John Lydon was back in San Francisco two years after The Sex Pistols’ final gig there, this time along Keith Levene, for a press conference heralding the domestic release of Public Image Ltd.’s ‘Second Edition’ LP, during the band’s first US tour (some video footage of that same press conference, for anyone interested, here.).

“…Lydon, 24, who selects his wardrobe from second-hand shops (“I never wear jeans”), is decked out in a bulky, dark-checked jacket, rumpled shirt and loosely-knotted tie. The jacket and baggy pants almost make him look stocky, accentuating his stumpy proportions (he is definitely not a hunchback though, as once rumoured).

His red hair is greased back casually, the beady stare – only a sliver of dark blue iris extends beyond large pupils – could melt glass…”
